The Nazi Party on Anthroposophy

Shortly after assuming power, Hitler's Nazi party banned the Anthroposophical Society in Germany and seized its assets. Rudolf Steiner's books were banned, and some publicly burned. The reasons given are reprinted below, along with an English translation. In all, it should be noted that the Nazi party correctly appraised Anthroposophy, and it cannot be denied that Anthroposophy is "simply incompatible" with National Socialism.

"Ich halte die anthroposophische Weltanschauung, die in jeder Beziehung international und pazifistisch eingestellt ist, für schlechthin unvereinbar mit der nationalsozialistischen. Die nationalsozialistische Weltanschauung baut sich auf auf dem Gedanken von Blut, Rasse, Volk und dann auf der Idee vom totalen Staat. Gerade diese zwei Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung und des Dritten Reiches werden von der Weltanschauung der Anthroposophie verneint. [...] Jede Untersuchung und Betätigung der Anthroposophie entspringt der anthroposophischen Weltanschauung mit Notwendigkeit. Darum bedeuten Schulen, die auf anthroposophischer Weltanschauung aufgebaut, von Anthroposophen betreut werden, eine Gefahr für echte deutsche Bildung [...]."

“I consider the Anthroposophical worldview, which is in every way internationally and pacifistically oriented, to be quite simply incompatible with National Socialism. The National Socialist worldview is built upon the conception of blood, race, and Volk, and then also, on the conception of the absolute state. Precisely these two fundamental pillars of the National Socialist worldview and the Third Reich are denied by the anthroposophical worldview. […] Every study and activity involving anthroposophy necessarily has its source in the anthroposophical worldview. This means that schools built upon the anthroposophical worldview and managed by anthroposophists are a danger to true German education […]”

"Durch das Festhalten der anthroposophischen »Geisteswissenschaften« an diesem, alten Geist-Begriff gehört die Anthroposophie der Epoche abendländischen Denkens an, die einem neuen rassisch-völkischen, das Leben und den Menschen als leiblich-geistige Ganzheit wertenden Denken gegenüber um ihren Fortbestand ringt. Auch die Anthroposophie löst den Geist aus seiner Verbindung mit der Rasse und dem Volk und verdammt das Rassische und Völkische in eine niedere Sphäre der Primitivität, des Instinkts, des durch den Geist zu überwindenden Triebs, der Vorzeitlichkeit. Sie erweist damit ihre Verflechtung mit den Hauptströmungen der bisherigen europäischen Geistesgeschichte, vor allem der Aufklärung, dem deutschen Idealismus und dem Liberalismus des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. In ihr ist die Geisteshaltung der französischen Revolution, das Humanitätsideal der Freimaurerei, aus der die Theosophie als die Mutterorganisation der Anthroposophie entstand, lebendig geblieben. Sie vermischt sich dann wie die Freimaurerei und Theosophie mit orientalischer Mystik, Okkultismus und Spiritismus, die in breiter Front, etwa in Form der Geheimlehren der Kabbala, über Europa hereinbrachen ... bewirken.
Diese weltanschaulichen Grundlagen bewirkten, daß die Anthroposophie in verhängnisvoll Weise allen anti-völkischen und anti-nationalen, überstaatlichen, pazifistischen und insbesondere jüdischen Einflüssen offengestanden hat ...” 2)

"Anthroposophical "spiritual science", because it holds fast to outmoded spiritual concepts, causes anthroposophy to belong to the epoch of occidental thinking against which our new race and volk and based thinking (that sees man as a unified physical-spiritual entity) is fighting for its continued existence. Anthroposophy, too, frees the spirit from its connection to race and volk and damns all that is racial and folk-based (Völkische) to lower spheres of primitivism – to the instinctual – considering it to be a drive to be overcome by the spirit, a prehistoricism. Thereby it demonstrates its interconnection with the dominant streams of previous European spiritual history, above all the Enlightenment, German Idealist philosophy, and the Liberalism of the previous century. In it remains living the idealism of the French Revolution and the humanitarian ideals of the Freemasons, as it does in Theosophy, the mother-organization from which it arose. Like Freemasonry and Theosophy, it mixes itself with oriental mysticism, occultism and spiritualism, and breaks like a large wave – similar in form to the secret teachings of the Kabbalah – over Europe…
“These foundations of the world view have the effect that anthroposophy stands open in a disastrous manner to all anti- völkisch, anti-Nationalistic, pacifistic, überstaatlichen (considering something to be more important than the state) and especially Jewish influences…”
